picking up where they left off three years ago, modern heads, the much-respected collaboration between gianluca meloni and dino sabatini, are back with a dynamic and intriguing four track ep. the duo go straight in here with the club-ready athena. throughout this track, tight percussive elements wind in and around one another, creating an ever-changing rhythm that you can only just hold onto. under this, tense synths pulse away, producing an opaque and insular atmosphere. next up, eumaeus lightens the mood somewhat, providing clarity with a distinct opening drum pattern. this mood doesnt last long though, as indiscernible, haunting vocals begin to echo in the distance, gradually moving closer and further in the mix as sharp pads swoosh either side. side b of the record opens with the deepest and longest track of the ep, eurycleia. simple yet unrelenting drums frame this hypnotic sci-fi episode, through which otherworldly screeches and rumbles reverberate over the twinkling sounds of machines. eurycleias atmosphere continues straight into the final track, laertes theme. this beatless piece takes eurycleias exploratory mood and extrapolates it over five and a half minutes, resulting in what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a glacial expedition in alien territory. as an ep this is a complete and coherent package, a perfect extension to modern heads previous work. the sound palette is familiar, yet refined, developed upon and taken further. the old beggar is undeniably worth the wait for anyone with a taste for the extraterrestrial.

in 2016, the festival in prora releases another vinyl, and this time it is a real tasty tidbit. the boys from kiel, mitja & daniel mes, who also played at this year’s festival, included their track „feel free“ on the record. this track is the beach-echo and a perfect medicine against the winter blues. the second track originates straight from the island rügen, produced by the well-known irie island crew and holds the name „rügen rockt“. the name speaks for itself and through the well harmonized dub-swing reggae vibes be sure to be grooved from north to south of the small island. the backside of the vinyl is a piece of handcrafted art. the very distinct tag am meer logo is engraved through the help of a special technique called: etched. this record does not only sound good, but it also looks amazing.

mamie s records is a record-label curated by la mamie s that represents electronic music artists since 2016. based in paris and founded in 2007, the mamie s crew is collecting vinyls since their young age. they met some musicians along the way and they would like to share with you their crushes. the first one is kodäma... kodäma is a music duo formed in 2014 by kiala ogawa (singer and composer originally from japan and congo) and by t-time (bassist and composer). the word --kodama--, meaning --echo-- in japanese, also refers to spirits conveyed by trees and forests. according to the legends, these spirits are responsible for the the phenomenon in which the mountains echo. kodäma’s universe is very linked to kiala’s cultural sphere with, as a major source of inspiration, her childhood’s memories from the japanese countryside. kodäma is a subtle combination of electronic and acoustic sounds with kiala’s captivating voice, blending english and japanese. from this mixture of sounds emerges a spiritual, experimental music marked by their own neo soul groove

larry and bell are two musos from the east and west of the atlantic, who met on a scuba trip in belize in 99. larry plays bongos, bell is on the organic sampler and echo pedal, and a local cast of musicians backed them up on guitar, double bass, and kick drum. after a few rum daiquiris and many spliff, these are the sessions whittled down to strictly the best of hits.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

holovr is jimmy billingham who also records under the aliass tidal, venn rain, journey of mind & holographic mind - he has released music on firecracker records, opal tapes and hooker vision as well as his own indole records release information anterior space may strike some listeners of a certain age as an echo of the gilded age of armchair techno exemplified by warp records artificial intelligence comps. theres a similar convergence of the cerebral and the blissful in the four epic compositions holovr (aka jimmy billingham) finesses from his analog and digital synths as that found on those early-90s pieces by black dog, b12, and others.

from the shores of tel aviv, stephan bazbaz does the honours of the 3rd release on alexkids dub techno imprint, providing two excellent and timeless tracks with the sharp beats and generous basses that define stephans productions. on the aside, 789 is a modern take on the genre with its dry approach, whereas 810 on the b-side will satisfy all echo lovers with its irresistible elegance. a release not to be missed.

with a pair of sturdy releases behind them already melbourne s short black crew call upon lesser-known talent rustal to deliver the goods in a deep, techy style. before the original productions dub maestro brendon moeller drops in to deliver a version of -privilege- that heads into the echo chamber and doesn t let up for the duration. it s a powerful, immersive beast of a track that provides a fitting alternative to the uptempo, melodic thrust of the original version. -forwards backwards down- pushes the chords to the front of the mix and jacks up the drums for a proper fist-shaking workout.

most excellent unlimiteds series of 45s celebrating the 45th year of danny krivits career continues with a blast of two heavyweight cuts that, to borrow the parlance of the era from which they came, are bonafide sure shots. wood, brass & steels *funkanova* a jazz-funk masterpiece and loft classic that was liberally sampled in the house world (black science orchestra, terrence parker, the bucketheads), is pared down to its most joyous elements. from the intro, a typical krivit maestros detail of an opening bass slide prefacing hands-in-the-air cascades of iconic horns and keys, to the echo of the last notes, its a perfect edit immaculately tailored for dj usage. the flip delves deeper into new york city dance history with a rough and rugged beat- down of a proto-disco, b-boy classic: boobie knight & the universal ladys * sex*. displaying his usual knack of going straight for the jugular, krivit takes the songs siren-call-to-the-dance floor horn riff as his starting point, peeling off another layer to the floor-shaking bass and drums before bringing it all back to the top with a perfectly placed drum roll that will have flash disciples fiending for doubles. solidifying this blazing double-sider is the fact that neither of these essential cuts has ever appeared in seven-inch form. another most excellent unlimited sure shot!

lp 180 g vinyl remastered by göttsching, long deleted vinyl reissue. remastered by manuel göttsching and released on his own label mg art. inventions for electric guitar is manuel göttschings first solo album, recorded: july-august 1974. the album was written and performed entirely by göttsching on electric guitar, hence the title. manuel played his guitar and used a 4 track teac a3340, revox a77 for echoes, wahwah pedal, volume pedal, schaller rotosound and hawaiian steel bar.

when hitting a streak it s best to keep going. for a prolific producer like ubx127 one ep just wasn t enough to keep up with his continuous output of high quality techno. constant permutation part 2 picks up where its predecessor left off and provides for another batch of deadly club weapons. living up to its title, beatless explorations sends out eerie signals deep into outer space, anticipating with suspense to maybe find some life form s response. it arrives in form of driving track felt and its ricocheting, arpeggiated synths, which would aptly soundtrack the decent of alien attack ships on our planet. weighty, yet mysterious Örnsberg seems to echo with the cries of long lost souls that have been trapped eternally inside its icy caverns. the ep ends with a masterclass in immersive sound design, a constant ebb and flow of layers, winding their way into the listeners subconscious. filling up a pair of twelves to the brim with tunes this well thought out and executed, ubx127 further displays his vast potential and leaves us with excitement for whatever he might be coming up with next.

following the release of his debut album as trevino earlier this year, marcus ‘intalex’ kaye marks his first notch on the hotflush bedpost with a plucky four-track ep, wearing all the stripes that an artist of his experience and versatility has earned. kaye’s four-to-the-floor productions as trevino have always possessed a latent sheen from the dynamic world of drum and bass where he first made his name. here it’s evident in the impeccably balanced mix of lead track, ‘slide away’, where forlorn melody is driven as much by bass as it is by liquid chords. the tempo is upped on ‘mosaic’ - a techno record that follows an uplifting path - and on desecrate it’s in fifth gear with a bass line that rolls and grows and bangs and rolls. the high-speed, echo chamber dub of ‘jungle love rounds off an ep of notable range.

get on down is a heavyweight slice of storming jamaican disco-reggae heat from the legendary studios of miami s tk disco empire. king sporty s version may not have been as well known as connie cases electro laden later 1982 version (also produced by sporty) but the perfect marriage of disco stylings and sports jamaican roots meant the original 1979 version was a cult classic in underground deep disco circles. over 35 years since get on down was released the keepers of the tk disco vaults have given permission for some of their classics and lesser known gems to be respectfully tweaked by contemporary producers and dj s who fully understand the lineage of the label and the music contained within. stepping up and get his hands dirty is none other than london dwelling, wolf music man medlar. a regular face behind the turntables all over the world medlar has lovingly freaked king sportys anthem for the modern dance-floor, extending the right parts in just the oh so right way, dubbing out parts that needed just a smidgen of echo here and there and generally making the track irresistible to dj s with its lovely long beat led intro. these are extremely tasteful edits, done with respect and reverence over 2 parts old school style. look out for those low flying dubbed out vox and lazer beams too, powerful stuff! this is only one of many underground disco classics that the mighty miami based tk disco label brought to the world, reimagined for 2016s dance-floor, officially sanctioned in conjunction with henry stone music / tk disco. file under - classic / essential!

philippe quenum returns to cadenza music with ‘solitaire’, some thirteen years after helping kick start the swiss label with the 2003 release ‘orange mistake’/ funky dandy’. this groundbreaking single, co-produced with luciano, has since become a landmark release, not just for the label, but also as the benchmark for the micro-house and minimal tech-house genre that developed over the decade. with a music career than spans back to the mid-80s (dancing in nyc as part of the breakdance troupe, the magnificent force), quenum found his forte with house music, both as a dj, and as a producer and label owner. setting up the access 58 label in 1998 as a platform for his music and collaborations, quenum has consistently released over the years for labels like crosstown rebels, soma, alphahouse, thema and trapez ltd. ‘solitaire’ finds quenum on fine form, on the lead track, dubby fx and bass shaking shots roll out over an urgent disco beat, muted brass and technoid stabs fire from all directions as the tension building pads flourish. shadowy forces are at play on ‘mystic’, discordant sounds echo and bellow over reverberating percussion and a dense back beat that fire into life with shuffling hi-hats. wrapping up this welcome return to the label is ‘mystery’, whipping snares and industrial clangs rumble over the urgent drums for more hypnotizing dancefloor work from philippe!

martin landskys long association with poker flat recordings continues with yet another exquisitely realized three-tracker. long since a staple of the underground electronic music scene in berlin and europe in general, landsky’s deft ear for dynamics and sense of off kilter dance-floor knowledge continues to do the business for djs and dancers alike. after the great success of vol.1 , landsky now presents ‘ekko traxx vol.2&#8242,,,. ‘echo my head’ is the perfect example - driving, focussed and funky, yet with a subtle undercurrent that keeps you slightly out of your comfort zone and locked in to the groove. weird night contains a spooky, discordant synth that raises the tension over and over, before giving way to a hard driving rhythm track that will see the late night heads fully losing themselves classic landsky style. that organ has a similar aesthetic, chunky rhythms and bass pulses for the floor, and synth stabs and melodic hooks that keep the track in constant forward motion.

“it was so important for us to play a kind of crossover then, to weave in touches of motown, philadelphia soul and teddy pendergrass that the coloured community appreciated, and basil’s cape town sound, and sipho’s sound that was legendary in the black community, and make music that people could all enjoy together... the regime divided us: people classified coloured had identity documents, black people had the dompas. we didn’t accept that separation. sipho, although he was born in kzn, could play any feel. sometime he’d joke, does my bass line feel coloured enough?”

tippa lee’s new album cultural ambassador will be released on stones throw, may 20, 2016. available now is the dub version of the album, dub them with reality, mixed by producer tom chasteen (dub club, natural numbers), who has reconfigured the tracks live on the mixing board with echo, reverb and various arcane electronics. the lp covers, in two variations, were screen printed in gold and black by hit & run, with artwork by ellen g. tippa lee was born and raised in kingston, jamaica. he started performing on his fathers sound system as a child, standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic. he made his first recordings at king tubby’s studio at the age of 12. eventually he teamed up with rappa robert and as a duo had a number of hits including “no trouble we”, an anthemic statement against police harassment, which was a number one jamaican hit in 1988 and is still played often on jamaican radio. in more recent years he has been based in the us, performing live and releasing his own underground cds.

this polyrhythmic swirl of drum machine, tape echo and locked grooves is the product of two post-1982 jam sessions between an anonymous dj and drum machine operator duo. the dj liked the way a record happened to skip. more were made to do so. the drum machine operator had had a bit too much, but he knew that 100 divided by 3 was 33 - and he was feeling the toms that night. file under: funky experimental.
